This is a list of characters from the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants.

Main Characters

SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is the title character of the series, is a yellow sea sponge who is shaped like a kitchen sponge. SpongeBob is a relentlessly optimistic character who works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant, attends boating school, and hangs out with his best friend, Patrick. SpongeBob lives in a home that is shaped like a pineapple. He is voiced by Tom Kenny and first appeared in Help Wanted.

Patrick Star

Patrick Star is a starfish and SpongeBob's best friend. He and SpongeBob have apparently known each other since infancy, and they share many interests (jelly fishing, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, bubble blowing, etc.) It is revealed in the episode "Rule of Dumb" that he and Spongebob's pet snail, Gary, are cousins. Patrick is very unintelligent. He often convinces SpongeBob to accompany him in dangerous or fruitless activities, such as playing near fish hooks and eating whole pumpkins. In spite of the disastrous outcomes of Patrick's ideas, SpongeBob constantly attests to Patrick's genius, and consults the starfish for advice and guidance.

Patrick loves food and is shown in some episodes to have quite a lot of stomach fat. His favorite foods are Krabby Patties. Patrick has no job or trade and spends most of his time sleeping or playing with SpongeBob. When he tries to find work, it is shown that he has little practical skill, for example in "Big Pink Loser", he struggles with tasks such as sweeping or opening a jar. However, he does have a driver's license and at one time he even had a boat. He is also inexplicably competent in first aid, though his methods are crass yet effective; in "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" he even rescued Squidward from choking using CPR (though all he did was administer mouth-to-mouth until Squidward was overinflated, Squidward's life was saved). He once masqueraded as a girl (Patricia) in one episode, ("That's No Lady!"), to escape an assassin and was found attractive to many characters, such as Mr. Krabs, Larry the lifeguard, and Squidward. Patrick is voiced by Bill Fagerbakke (Dauber) of the TV show Coach.

Squidward Tentacles

Squidward J. Tentacles is a fictional character in the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. He is portrayed by Rodger Bumpass. He is a six-legged blue-green octopus,[1] known in the series for his selfish and unenthused personality and belief that he is better than his undersea neighbors. Squidward generally uses two of his tentacles as arms and groups the other four into two pairs of legs.

While his neighbors SpongeBob and Patrick are generally cheerful, Squidward is very irritable and unenthusiastic. He has a dry wit, and is constantly sarcastic. He is not very popular in Bikini Bottom due to his supercilious attitude toward those he feels are "uncultured". Squidward is an aspiring artist and musician, though most of his art is created in tribute to himself and his music--his instrument of choice being the clarinet--is considered poor.

Sandy Cheeks

Sandy Cheeks is a female squirrel from Texas. She wears a deep sea diving suit while in the ocean, except when inside her large underwater home (known as the "Treedome"). She is kind, very strong, extremely intelligent, and possesses a good measure of basic common sense (which is generally lacking in SpongeBob and Patrick). She is often depicted doing advanced mathematics, athletics, or scientific studies, but also enjoys doing karate with SpongeBob. Sandy also hibernates (yet was seen awake during Christmas). Sandy is voiced by Carolyn Lawrence and first appeared in Tea at the Treedome. Over the course of the series, Sandy is shown to be something of an adrenaline addict and highly competitive. She is frequently shown practicing Karate with SpongeBob , dreams of skydiving in Sleepy Time and practices several extreme sports, as shown in Pre-Hibernation Week.

Eugene H. Krabs

Eugene H. Krabs, mostly referred as "Mr. Krabs", is the owner and founder of the Krusty Krab restaurant and Spongebob and Squidward's boss. He is a crab, yet his daughter Pearl is a whale. Krabs is very greedy and cheap, but he will, when pressured, put his skinflint nature aside for someone else's sake. Krabs sometimes identifies himself as a sailor, most likely because he did serve in the Navy at one point. He is voiced by Clancy Brown and first appeared in the episode "Help Wanted."

Sheldon J. Plankton

Sheldon J. Plankton or simply "Plankton", as he is known, is a tiny, evil, egomaniacal zooplankter who is Mr. Krabs' business arch rival, running a competing restaurant called "The Chum Bucket". His stated goals in life are to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula from the Krusty Krab and to rule the world. Plankton, voiced by Doug Lawrence, is also married to a computer "W.I.F.E." (Wired Integrated Female Electroencephalograph) named Karen (voiced by Jill Talley). Plankton and Karen first appear in the episode Plankton!

Minor Characters

  • Gary the Snail is SpongeBob's pet snail. Within the series, snails are analogous to cats, and as such Gary vocalizes like one. SpongeBob can apparently translate Gary's meows and purrs into English. Gary is also voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • Mrs. Puff is a white puffer fish with blonde hair and green fins. She is the teacher at her boating school, where residents of Bikini Bottom learn to drive the boat vehicles that are featured in the show. Mrs. Puff is voiced by Mary Jo Catlett and first appeared in the episode Boating School.
  • Patchy the Pirate is a non-animated character who is the President of the SpongeBob SquarePants fan club. He hosts the SpongeBob SquarePants specials and major events and is portrayed by Tom Kenny. He first appeared in "Christmas Who?"
  • Potty the Parrot is Patchy the Pirate's pet parrot, a marionette. He normally annoys and talks back to Patchy. Potty's favorite band is "The Birdbrains." He resides in Encino, California. He is voiced by the creator of the show, Stephen Hillenburg and by Paul Tibbitt in "Friend or Foe?". He first appeared in "Christmas Who?"
  • Larry the Lobster is the lifeguard of Bikini Bottom's popular beach, Goo Lagoon. He is a bodybuilder and is sometimes seen either competing or working out. Larry first appeared in the episode "Ripped Pants" and is also good friends with Sandy and SpongeBob. Larry is voiced by Mr. Lawrence.

Mermaid Man is voiced by Ernest Borgnine and Barnacle Boy is voiced by Tim Conway. They first appear in the episode named after them.
  • King Neptune is the monarch of the ocean. He is voiced by John O'Hurley and Kevin Michael Richardson in two episodes. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Jeffrey Tambor voiced the film version of King Neptune.
  • Flying Dutchman is a green, vegan pirate ghost named after the famous ghost ship of the same name. He lives in a giant ship that floats in the underwater "sky." The Flying Dutchman escorts people to Davy Jones's Locker (which is an actual locker full of sweaty socks, because "Davy Jones works out."). This almost happened to Mr. Krabs. He is voiced by Brian Doyle-Murray and first appeared in Scaredy Pants.
  • The French Narrator speaks at the start of some episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants and does this with a heavy French accent. He is voiced by Tom Kenny. On the November 16, 2004 episode of Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Kenny admitted that Jacques Cousteau was the inspiration for the French narrator, as SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg considers Cousteau an idol. The Narrator also seems to give the impression that the series is actually a documentary being filmed in the present, due to Spongebob saying in one episode, "I get the feeling that, somewhere, a pirate and a parrot are arguing about me. And the parrot is winning."

Supporting characters

  • Old Man Jenkins is an elderly fish who resides at Shady Shoals Rest Home. He used to live in the Rusty Krab before Mr. Krabs purchased it and converted it into a restaurant. He was voiced by Mr. Lawrence in "Sailor Mouth" and Tom Kenny in "My Pretty Seahorse", the only two episodes where he has spoken.

  • Gill Gilliam is a doctor who works in the Bikini Bottom hospital.
  • Squilliam Fancyson is Squidward's successful, snooty arch rival from high school.
  • Lou has been seen working at various establishments in the Bikini Bottom community, such as a ice cream man, a balloon vendor, and a cashier at the Barg 'n' Mart.
  • Karen - Plankton's "computer wife", Karen. She is the brain to Sheldon J. Plankton, supplying him with plots. She irritates him most of the time. Plankton refers to her as W.I.F.E. (wired integrated female electroencephalograph). She was a security system when she was dating Plankton. She is voiced by Tom Kenny's wife, Jill Talley.
  • Tom is a major Krusty Krab customer, and works as a cameraman and a mattress salesman. In "Chocolate With Nuts," it is revealed that Tom is a chocoholic, constantly yelling out "CHOCOLATE!"
  • Johnny is the Realistic fish head who appears at the beginning of each show during the theme song and whenever SpongeBob is watching the news on TV. He also hosted coverage of the 21st Fry Cook Games, was the narrator of the King of Karate video in "Karate Island", and voiced the loudspeaker at the Bikini Bottom Zoo in "The Smoking Peanut". In the game SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, it is revealed his name is Johnny. He is voiced by Mr. Lawrence.
  • Painty the Pirate is a painting of a pirate head. He sings the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song. He also appears in "Your Shoe's Untied" and "Wet Painters". He is voiced by Patrick Pinney.

  • Uncle Captain Blue - One of SpongeBob's uncles. He first appeared in "Blackjack!". That was his only appearance.
  • Blackjack SquarePants - SpongeBob's cousin. He only appears (so far) in "Blackjack!." Blackjack bullied SpongeBob much when he was little- Uncle Captain Blue says about Blackjack to SpongeBob," Let's just say... I hope you know how to walk without legs... or arms...or a body. However, now Blackjack is about the size of SpongeBob's toe.
  • Mrs. Betsy Krabs - Mr. Krabs's mother and Pearl's grandmother. The episodes that have featured her have shown her to be very strict and no-nonsense. She is voiced by Paul Tibbitt in her first two appearances, but is voiced by Sirena Irwin in her third appearance.
  • Herb and Margie Star - Herb is Patrick's father who is voiced by Thomas F. Wilson. Margie is Patrick's mother who is voiced by Lori Alan. Patrick is nervous around his parents because he believes he is dumber than he actually is.

  • Evelyn is a female pink fish that wears shell bras and a dress. Her name was revealed in Band Geeks.
  • Don the Whale is a whale that is a bodybuilder similar to Larry. He first had a cameo in Ripped Pants. He didn't have a role until MuscleBob BuffPants, in which he was a contestant in the Anchor Throwing Contest.
