America's Next Top Model, Cycle 11 is the eleventh cycle of America's Next Top Model and the fifth season to be aired on The CW network. It premiered on September 3 2008, with a 2-hour premiere. The winner of this cycle, similar to the past four cycles, will win management and representation by Elite Model Management, a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics, and a cover and six-page fashion spread in Seventeen magazine. The promotional catchphrase of the cycle is "Feel The Love".[1]
The show will take place in Los Angeles, unlike last season, Cycle 10, which took place in New York City. The international destination for this cycle is Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This cycle features 14 contestants, similar to cycles 3, 4 and 10.
This cycle included a first for the show - having a transgender contestant named Isis participate and qualify for the final 14. The inclusion has been noted as an "unprecedented opportunity" by Neil Giuliano, president of GLAAD.[2]
Episode summaries
The Notorious Fierce Fourteen
Original Airdate: September 3 2008
The 33 semifinalists are driven to San Fernando Valley, California, where they meet Mr. and Ms. J at the “Top Model Institute of Technology”. Inside, they go through a series of body scans and catwalk analysis. Later, Tyra meets the girls and interviews begin. In between, Isis reveals that she is transgendered, shocking many. At the end of the day, only 20 girls remain.
The final 20 are taken to their first photo shoot – posing in blue metallic cat suits. After some final deliberations, the final 14 are chosen.
Top Model Inauguration
Original Airdate: September 3 2008
The 14 finalists are driven to Los Angeles, California. Once settled into their new loft, the girls bombard Isis regarding her gender, drawing both empathy and disgust from various parties.
The next day, the girls visit “Magic Castle”, a private club for magicians, where Nigel, Paulina and the Jays drop by as surprise guests for personal one-to-one interviews with the girls. Their photo shoot this week had the girls portray different political statements, as follows:
Contestant | Political Issue |
---|---|
Analeigh | Healthcare |
Brittany | Military |
Clark | Bureaucracy |
Elina | Foreign Policy |
Hannah | Nuclear Weapons |
Isis | Privacy |
Joslyn | Unemployment |
Lauren Brie | Education |
Marjorie | Immigration |
McKey | Environment |
Nikeysha | Cloning |
Samantha | Economy |
ShaRaun | Homeland Security |
Sheena | Energy |
During judging, the judges are unimpressed with ShaRaun’s photo and interview and are put off by Nikeysha’s excuses, landing them in the bottom two, but it is ShaRaun’s lack of potential that sends her home crying.
