Oggy and the Cockroaches (also known as Oggy et les Cafards in French) is a French animated series produced by Gaumont Film Company in 1998, creator of the popular series Space Goofs.

Cast

Synopsis

The show centers on Oggy, a content and lazy, albeit very tender fat blue cat, who would usually spend his days watching TV and cooking - if it wasn't for the three pesky roaches in the household: Joey, Dee Dee and Marky (named after members of the punk group Ramones). The trio seems to enjoy generally making Oggy's life miserable, which involves mischieves ranging from (in most cases) plundering his fridge to such awkward things like hijacking the train Oggy just boarded.

The cartoon itself relies on slapstick humour, much like its "ancestor", Tom and Jerry, only amplifying the level of extremities up a notch; while "traditional" slapstick cartoon characters prefer dropping anvils and pianos on each other, this show sometimes uses even buses or submarines. Despite these however, most gags are easily accessible and enjoyable for younger viewers. This show is a cross-between Tom and Jerry and Happy Tree Friends. There are no acceptable endings for the episodes — happy endings are never guaranteed.

Production

The 30 minute show typically contains 3 episodes. In total, 52 shows were produced. The voices were all provided by Marc du Pontavice, but no spoken voice is heard. However, certain voices like laughter could be used on one of the cats and later on one of the cockroaches when speeded up. In Germany, witty poems relating to the screen action were dubbed over the original sound, written by German dialog editor legend Eberhard Storeck and spoken by actor Dirk Bach.

DVDs

Five DVDs of the show came out in 2003, each with four shows (12 episodes) on.

Characters

  • Oggy is the protagonist of the show. Bearing some uncanny resemblances to fellow cat Garfield, Oggy usually spends his time either watching TV or doing housework - when not chasing roaches. Although sometimes acting somewhat female (or in some cases, dressing like a maid, gardening), his gender can be considered male (in one episode the roaches steal his laundry bag and keep dropping a track of clothes - Oggy picks them up one-by-one, but embarrassingly moves offscreen when a bra becomes visible among the boxershorts and socks)
  • Joey is the self-proclaimed leader of the roaches. Even though he's the smallest roach in the gang, most of the time he's the brains behind the operations, but is often forced to go solo, because his companions think his plans are stupid.
  • Dee Dee is an ever-hungry, devour-it-all roach. His appetite sometimes reaches insane regions, often resulting in the consumption of larger animals (such as hyenas in one case and due to some plant in another case, an insect).
  • Marky is a laid-back, suave heartbreaker roach, often not really caring about what the two others are doing. His hobby is, obviously, dating girls - even puppets, and reading books.
  • Jack is the other cat in the show. A complete opposite of Oggy, Jack is short-tempered, violent, arrogant - a perfect target for the roaches to annoy. He often finds himself building huge machinery such as roach-catching contraptions, most of the time resulting in backfiring. He is also very interested in Chemistry (that is, the more explosive parts of it). Jack is Oggy's cousin (he often sleeps over at Oggy's house) and neighbour (though he drives the couple of feet between their houses whenever he visits Oggy) but due to the inconsistencies in the cartoon, his house tends to be replaced by Bob's every now and then. Jack can come into Oggy's home without knocking and he often goes to see Oggy to help him against the roaches' evil schemes. His telephone number is 2.
  • Bob, Oggy's huge neighbor dog, - though he's not mentioned in the opening credits - is one frequent star in the show. While Bob tries to live his life as quietly and calmly as possible, the next door racket usually results in destruction of his property, for which he usually responds with pummeling one of the cats. This mostly happens off-screen, usually because the image is changed to silly wallpaper-like backgrounds; the only hint the viewer gets is fighting sounds and cat-squealing. In the episode 'Working Cat', it is revealed his teeth and gum are entirely composed of metal. It is interesting to note that in the episode 'Off Limits', Bob has portraits of Elizabeth I, Henry VIII, Anne of Cleves, and Catherine of Aragon on the walls of his house.
  • Monica, Oggy's sister and Jack's love-interest. In one episode (Don't Rock The Cradle) they seem to have a child together. She visits Oggy's house every now and then. She is well known for being very active and likes to take on physical challenges such as sky diving and bungee jumping. She's always seen skating around on her inline skates. She has the least amount of appearances of all the main characters.

List of Oggy episodes

Note: These episodes are listed in alphabetical order rather than chronological.

  • 3 Wishes and You're Out A bedouin, who is lost and parched in as desert, finds a magic lamp. He uses his three wishes to get a palace, a pile of gold and lovely girls. But he forgets to wish for water. The genie flees after being attacked by the infuriated bedouin and of course, ends up in Oggy's house.
  • Abominable Snow Moth An abominable snow moth came and eats yarn in Oggy's home.
  • All Out of Shape While Oggy was playing and using his imagination with clay, the cockroaches uses a clay Oggy as a voodoo doll to literally shape Oggy's life into a wreck.
  • A Bird Off Ill Omen Oggy is minding his own business, watering his flowers when a turkey comes running and hides behind his back. Shortly after, a visually impaired hunter appears from the hedge. The hunter has a problem, and so is for Oggy: Because of his poor eyesight, turkeys looks like Oggy to him and Oggy looks vice-versa.
  • A Truce for Christmas Christmas Eve... a time of love, of gift-giving... and a time of advantage for the cockroaches as they attempt to ruin Oggy's Christmas, even with the truce formed by them...
  • Baby Boum The stork is coming and, of course, he also brings babies. Oggy decides to dump a baby in Bob's garden. As the storks continue to bring babies, this results in an all-out infant battle between Oggy and Bob where both are trying different methods of dumping the babies in the opponent's garden.
  • Baby Doll Oggy is playing with his doll and its included playhouse. The cockroaches, however, have taken the playhouse for themselves and when Marky spots the doll, he falls in love with it. This results in Oggy making an all-out siege on the playhouse to take back what's his.
  • Bait Bites Back Oggy and Jack were going fishing but Oggy try to catch the cockroaches as baits - and these baits sure can bite back!
  • Barbecue Oggy is enjoying a barbecue in his garden and Jack is unsuccessfully trying to fly a kite. When he (Jack) gets wrapped in the line the cockroaches are using for their tennis ball, he starts a quabble. The quabble soon involves them all, including Bob and the Hawk living in Oggy's tree.
  • Beachcombers Oggy is riding his Moped to the beach. The cockroaches, of course, decide to tag along without him noticing it. And when Oggy and the cockroaches are near each other, trouble is bound to happen. They continue their never-ending quabble in which the little Chinese clams and the other visitors on the beach are soon unwillingly involved.
  • Beware Of Destruction Jack is renovating Oggy's house and when the cockroaches steal his cement tray to use it as a swimming pool. Unfortunately, Jack ends up as a statue when the cockroaches put cement in his drink.
  • Beware of the Bodyguard The cockroaches are causing trouble, again. Oggy is sick and tired of them bullying him all the time (at least more than he usually is), so he decides to get... a bodyguard.
  • Bitter Chocolate Oggy gets a box of deluxe-chocolate delivered to his house and gets inside to enjoy it. But the cockroaches (quite obviously) have decided to take it all for themselves.

(Sidenote: The cockroaches laughter in this episode is different, as this is the pilot episode)

  • Black and White Oggy is trying a new, super-strong detergent. The cockroaches decide to fill the washing machine to the brim with it as Ogyy exits the laundry room. This causes the washing machine to over-flow and cover Oggy's house with pink foam. When a rain cloud washed it off, the house (and the garden) has lost all its colour. This has quite a depressive effect on both Oggy and the cockroaches.
  • The Blob After Oggy receives a lava lamp-like object from the mail, the cockroaches release the blob from inside of it, which then starts growing and eating anything in its path.
  • Blue Sunday Jack takes Oggy on a Sunday trip with the beach as the destination. The cockroaches decide to tag along. But trouble is always around the corner when the cockroaches are placed in a small space (Jack's car in this case) together with the two cats.

But while he does, the unusually intelligent kid starts performing strange experiments on the cockroaches. Soon, Oggy must call the FBAÏ (Federal Bureau of Analgesics Ïo) for help.
