(108496) Sullenberger is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt that was discovered on May 21, 2001 by Roy Tucker at the Goodricke-Pigott Observatory in Tucson, Arizona.
Naming
After the discovery in 2001, the asteroid was given the provisional name 2001 KD 64 consisting of numbers and letters - according to the scheme of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Tucker was already an experienced astronomer in 2001. Currently - as of summer 2019 - over 700 first-time observations of small objects are attributed to him. As a discoverer, he had the right to name each of these objects. But he took this opportunity only after 17 years. The discoverer of the asteroid announced via Twitter in May 2018 that he had subsequently named it after Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III in honor of him. As a pilot in 2009 after a successful ditching with an Airbus A320 on the Hudson River, he received a lot of media attention and was celebrated as a hero in the USA years later.
