(1198) Atlantis is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 7, 1931 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth in Heidelberg .
At the suggestion of Gustav Stracke , the asteroid was named after the legendary sunken island of Atlantis .
