(12211) Arnoschmidt is an asteroid that was discovered on May 28, 1981 by the German astronomer Hans-Emil Schuster at the European Southern Observatory .

The asteroid was named on September 28, 2004 after the writer Arno Schmidt (1914–1979), whose works contain a variety of puns and references to astronomical topics. The name was given at the suggestion of the astronomer Hilmar W. Duerbeck (1948–2012).
