(12611) Ingres is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .
The asteroid was named on November 24, 2007 after the French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867), a representative of classicism and an important representative of official art in France in the 19th century.
