(12761) Pauwels is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 9 October 1993 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered.
The asteroid was named after the Belgian astronomer and astrometer Thierry Pauwels (* 1957), who works at the Observatoire royal de Belgique and in 1996 significantly improved the Schmidt camera there by installing a CCD camera.
