(188) Menippe is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt discovered on June 18, 1878 by Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters .
The celestial body was named after Menippe , one of the Nereid daughters of the sea god Nereus from Greek mythology .

Menippe moves between 2.3 ( perihelion ) astronomical units to 3.3 astronomical units ( aphelion ) in 4.6 years around the sun . The orbit is inclined 11.7 ° to the ecliptic , the orbital eccentricity is 0.18.

Menippe has a diameter of 39 km. It has a light, silicate-containing surface with an albedo of 0.24. It rotates around its own axis in around 12 hours.
