The asteroid (1906) Naef was discovered on September 5, 1972 by the Swiss astronomer Paul Wild in the Zimmerwald Observatory of the University of Bern as the 1972 RC .
The asteroid was named after the Swiss amateur astronomer Robert A. Naef (1907–1975).
