(2289) McMillan is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden Survey .

The name of the asteroid was chosen in honor of the American astronomer Robert S. McMillan , the project manager of the Spacewatch program.
