(23405) Nisyros is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 19 September 1973 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California was discovered.
The asteroid is named after the Greek island of Nisyros in the South Aegean Sea , which is of volcanic origin. The last major eruption occurred in 1888.
