(23988) Maungakiekie is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 2 September 1999 by the British astronomer Ian P. Griffin at Stardome Observatory of Auckland in New Zealand ( IAU code was discovered 467).
The asteroid was named after the Māori name for the extinct volcanic cone One Tree Hill in Auckland, which is an important memorial for many New Zealanders.
