(26355) Grueber is an asteroid of the main belt which was discovered on December 23, 1998 by the Austrian amateur astronomer Erich Meyer at the Davidschlag observatory ( IAU code 540) near Linz in Austria .
The asteroid was named on January 7, 2004 after the explorer, Jesuit and missionary Johann Grueber (1623–1680), who in 1661 was the first European ever to reach the Tibetan capital Lhasa .
