(31338) Lipperhey is an asteroid of the main outer belt discovered on April 25, 1998 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile .

The asteroid was named after the German - Dutch eyewear maker and inventor Hans Lipperhey (1570–1619), who developed the Dutch telescope in 1608 .
