(3174) Alcock is an asteroid of the main belt , the October 26, 1984 of US astronomers Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station ( IAU code 688) of the Lowell Observatory in Coconino County was discovered.
The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .
The asteroid was named after the eminent English amateur astronomer George ED Alcock , the visual discoverer of five comets and five novae .
