(3255) Tholen is a Martian orbit asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on September 2, 1980 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station ( IAU code 688) of the Lowell Observatory in Coconino County .
The asteroid was named after the American astronomer and planetologist David J. Tholen . He works at the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii and is both the co-discoverer of the asteroid (99942) Apophis and the creator of a classification scheme for classifying asteroids based on their spectral properties.
