(3351) Smith is an asteroid of the main belt , which on September 7, 1980 by Edward L. G. Bowell was discovered.
The asteroid was named after the American astronaut Michael John Smith , who died as a pilot on the Challenger flight STS-51-L on January 28, 1986. The space shuttle was torn apart shortly after takeoff by the explosion of its liquid fuel tank.
