(39653) Carnera is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on October 17, 1995 by the Italian amateur astronomers Piero Sicoli and Pierangelo Ghezzi at the Osservatorio Astronomico Sormano ( IAU code 587) in the Lombard pre-Alps in the province of Como .

The asteroid was named on June 2, 2015 after the Italian astronomer Luigi Carnera (1875–1962), who began his career as an assistant to Max Wolf at the State Observatory in Heidelberg-Königstuhl .
