(4587) Rees is discovered on 30 September 1973 Asteroid of the Amor type . The asteroid was discovered at the Palomar Observatory by Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels .
The asteroid was named in honor of Sir Martin Rees after him. The name was suggested by Jan Hendrik Oort .
