(55576) Amycus is an asteroid belonging to the group of centaurs .
It was discovered on April 8, 2002 as part of the NEAT project at the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 644) in California .
It is named after the centaur Amykos , the son of Ophion , who attended the wedding ceremony of the Lapith king Peirithoos and was killed there in battle.
