(6001) Thales is an asteroid of the asteroid belt that was discovered on February 11, 1988 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .
The asteroid was named after the Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus .
