(6129) Democritus is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 4 September 1989 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered.
It was named in honor of Democritus , a philosopher of ancient Greece who is counted among the pre-Socratics .
