(9499) Excalibur is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 29 September 1973 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory ( observatory code 675) in California was discovered.

The asteroid is named after Excalibur , the sword of the mythical King Arthur .
