(9815) Mariakirch is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .
The asteroid was named on November 11, 2000 after the German astronomer Maria Margaretha Kirch (1670-1720), who discovered the comet of 1702 and observed the variable star Mira Ceti .
