The sterile section of the leaf is gray-green, almost sessile and simple to double pinnate. It appears to have its source well above the center of the plant. The fertile section is pinnate two to three times.

Spore ripening is from June to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = approx. 180.

ecology

The branchy diamond fern is a geophyte .

Occurrence

The branchy diamond fern is common in Europe and North America . In Europe, it is found mainly in Northern Europe and in Eastern Central Europe , in the Baltic Sea region up to near the Arctic Circle , in areas with an Atlantic climate it rarely occurs or is absent there, southward to the Alps and in the Mediterranean region there are only a few sites. In Russia it can only be detected very sporadically.

The branchy diamond fern is often associated with the real moon rue ( Botrychium lunaria ) in Central Europe , but it obviously prefers less calcareous and more acidic locations and sandy soils . It occurs in societies of the order Nardetalia and the class Sedo-Scleranthetea.
