Until 2010, Ålem was an independent crime scene with 803 inhabitants. Thereafter it was added to the roughly twice as large crime scene Blomstermåla, the center of which is just under five kilometers to the northwest, as the area along the road between the locations is now practically continuously built up.
The European route 22 runs east of the town on the Norrköping - Kalmar section . At Ålem, Riksväg 34 branches off the European route, which continues in the direction of Blomstermåla via Vimmerby and Linköping to Motala .
