Édouard Armand Lartet (born April 15, 1801 in Saint-Guiraud , † January 28, 1871 in Seissan ) was a French lawyer and paleontologist . He became known with the fossil of Pliopithecus , a primate from the Miocene, discovered by Sansa in 1837 and published in 1851 .

From 1860 he and his patron Henry Christy carried out archaeological excavations in the cave of Aurignac (northern Pyrenees ), then in the Périgord . In 1861 he set up the first chronological system of Stone Age cultures, based on the principle of key fossils in paleontology :

• "Period of the great cave bear" (= Neanderthal period, Middle Paleolithic )
• "Period of the Mammoth" (= older Upper Palaeolithic )
• "Period of the rentier" (= Magdalenian )
• “Period of the aurochs and the polished ax” (= Neolithic ).

In 1864 a report appeared on excavations in Laugerie-Haute (near Les Eyzies ). Lartet also discovered the archaeological sites of La Madeleine and Le Moustier .
