After an exhibition of views of the Fontainebleau forest in 1859, he devoted himself primarily to the creation of drawings from 1860 to 1895. He illustrated magazines such as Le Monde illustré , Le Journal pour rire , Le Journal de la jeunesse or, for example, The Illustrated London News .

From 1865 he worked closely with Jules Verne and illustrated many of his works. He illustrated Verne's first and best-known novels. These include Five Weeks in the Balloon , Captain Hatteras ' Adventures , Journey to the Center of the Earth , The Children of Captain Grant and the first eleven chapters of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea . He was assisted by Henri de Montaut with the illustrations for Verne's first novels ( Five Weeks in a Balloon , Captain Hatteras ' Adventure ) . In 1866 Riou traveled for Le Monde illustré and in 1873 to Russia to document, among other things, the wedding of the Tsar's daughter with drawings.

Between 1860 and 1883, Riou created over five thousand drawings for several great authors in the most famous literature of his time, for example for the reference work La terre avant le déluge ( The earth before the flood ). Illustrations were also taken from the German youth magazine Der Gute Kamerad .

"I believe his work stylistically spans the transition between the illustrators of the early 19th century and those of the latter half - when the profession of professional illustrators became established. Some of the qualities that Riou carried over were the often cartoon like depiction of characters and the use of numerous 'spot' illustrations. "

- Ron Miller , 1997

“I believe his work is stylistically the transition from the illustrators of the early 19th century to those of the second half when the profession of professional illustrator was established. Some of Riou's qualities were the often caricature-like depictions of characters and the use of numerous illustrations that focus on situations. "

Riou also illustrated Le meneur de loups ( The Wolf's Guide ) by Alexandre Dumas the Elder . Ä. and Walter Scott's novels Ivanhoe and Waverley , the latter being Scott's first novel. In 1892 Riou contributed eight illustrations to Karl May's novel The Bear Hunter's Son in the Russian magazine Vokrug sveta (German: [Rund] um die Welt ), one of the first popular science magazines in Russia .

At the end of his career, Riou was accepted into the Legion of Honor .
