Bečej ( Serbian - Cyrillic Бечеј , Hungarian Óbecse , German  Altbetsche ) is a town and municipality in Serbia in the Južna Bačka district . The city has 25,774 inhabitants and the municipality 40,987 (2002 census). In the city center is the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. George the Great Martyr .

In Bečej, the Great Batschka Canal flows into the Tisza , which separates Bečej from the neighboring town of Novi Bečej (New Betsche), which is already in the Banat.
