The BBÖ Uh was a narrow gauge - Steam Locomotive series , which was built in the 1920s.

A large number of U class narrow-gauge locomotives remained outside of the new Austria after the First World War . That is why the Austrian Federal Railways ( BBÖ) procured a newly developed series of superheated steam locomotives , also as a replacement for outdated, inefficient types . The tried and tested C1 axle order of the U was retained, but the outer frame under the driver's cab was omitted.Instead, the superheated steam boiler, which is much larger in diameter than the U, was placed higher in order to create adequate space for the fire box . The cylinder diameter was 350 mm and a Caprotti valve control was selected as the control. The maximum speed was 40 km / h.

Between 1928 and 1930 six locomotives were built by Krauss in Linz , the first of which was used on the Ybbstalbahn . On the Pinzgaubahn , they replaced the Z series , which was too weak for trolley operation . In 1931, the Floridsdorf locomotive factory bought two more machines, in which the Caprotti control was replaced by the more conventional Heusinger control with Lentz valves (Lentz valve control).

After the annexation of Austria , the locomotives were taken over as 99.821–828 in the numbering scheme of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

After the Second World War , all eight machines became part of the ÖBB and were taken over as series  498 in the new numbering scheme introduced in 1953. In 1960 the locomotives 498.01, 02 and 05 were decommissioned and sold to the Österreichisch-Alpine Montangesellschaft . These changed the gauge of the locomotives to 830 mm and used them until they were electrified and re-gauged to 900 mm in 1967 on the ore railway in Radmer in Styria .

The remaining locomotives remained in service until around the mid-1960s and were ultimately replaced by the 2095 series diesel locomotives . The 498s were not formally retired until 1973, after they had been parked in Ober-Grafendorf on the Mariazellerbahn for several years . The five machines that remained with the ÖBB were erected as monuments after they were taken out of service or acquired by museum railroad associations .

The last 498.08 (Uh.102) to be built is in use on the Bregenzerwaldbahn , 498.04 is on the Steyrtalbahn and has been operational again since September 2012 after the main inspection. Furthermore, the 498.07 has been placed at the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn in Krimml.

The Zillertalbahn also acquired a Uh series locomotive in 1930, which bears the number 5 there . This is still in active use today in front of the popular tourist trains on this railway. It was equipped with an oil furnace in 2010.
