The oil passage island is a left bank connected to the shore peninsula between the Düsseldorf district Heerdt and Neuss Harbor . It is uninhabited and is in flood the Rhine regularly flooded large parts.

A silted up arm of the Rhine, which is only flooded during floods, separates the oil gangway island from the western port area. The name is said to come from the eel fishing that was carried out in this area in earlier times.

Nature reserve and renaturation project

The 57 hectare site has been under nature protection since 1977, making it the oldest nature reserve in the Rhine district of Neuss . It is home to one of the rare gray heron colonies in Germany and is a regular breeding ground for the oriole . The vegetation is dominated by an uncultivated poplar stand.

Since the 1990s there have been considerations of renaturing the silted arm of the Rhine and thus making the Ölganginsel peninsula a real island again. However, test boreholes in 2004 revealed that the soil was heavily polluted by alluvial material. The disposal problems that this caused have not yet been finally resolved and are delaying the progress of the project.
