from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The kkStB 16 series of steam locomotives were express train locomotives with tender of the kk Austrian State Railways (kkStB), originally from the Moravian-Silesian Central Railway (MSCB) and the ÖNWB .

The MSCB apparently ordered these two machines after the ÖNWB delivery from the Floridsdorf locomotive factory . They only differ from the ÖNWB series IIIb in details.

At MSCB, the machines had the numbers 25-26 and the names ETZEL and REDTENBACHER . The kkStB gave them in 1895 the numbers 16.01-02 .

The 16.2 came after the First World War to the CSD and was with the other 16s than  232,001 added. The 16.01 was retired before 1901.

The Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik (Sigl) delivered 30 units of the IIIa series to the ÖNWB in 1870–1871  , with the numbers 13–42 and the names STEPHENSON , GERSTNER , VOLTA , COCKERILL , GAUSS , GHEGA , RESSEL , GUTENBERG , NEWTON , GALILEI , KOPERNIKUS , LANNA , VEGA , REAUMUR , FRANKLIN , BERZELIUS , ARAGO , HENZ , FAIRBAIRN , ETZEL , ARCHIMEDES , CELSIUS , FAHRENHEIT , PYTHAGORAS , COLUMBUS , REDTENBACHER , NEVILLE , GAY-LUSSAC , DAVY and KEPLER . The model for the IIIa series was the 2B type from the SNDVB . For the first time, hexagonal glasses were used in the forehead lanterns. This ÖNWB curiosity was not changed until it was nationalized.

Until 1900 the machines of this series hauled the night mail trains Vienna - Tetschen .

In 1873 the Floridsdorf locomotive factory delivered 16 units of the IIIb series  to the ÖNWB, which gave them the numbers 43–58 and the names PAMBOUR , TORICELLI , KUDLER , SOMMEILLER , PAUL MEIHSNER , FRIEDRICH SCHNIRCH , ADALBERT V. SCHMID , STUART MILL , SIMON STAMPFER , SHARP , CRAMPTON , PRECHTL , RAPHAEL DONNER , MARIOTTE , GRAF STADION and WINCKELMANN . They differed only slightly from series IIIa (see table).

From 1893 onwards, 27 of the IIIa and IIIb series received better boilers.

The machines were used in Vienna, Deutschbrod , Reichenberg , Josefstadt , Königgrätz , Groß Wossek and Tetschen. In 1895 they needed 14 to 16 hours for the passenger trains Vienna – Tetschen (457 km). They were later used in local traffic between Vienna and Stockerau .

After the nationalization in 1909, the series IIIa was assigned the number group 16.02-30 and the series IIIb was assigned the numbers 16.31-46 .

After the First World War , the remaining machines came to the PKP , which they soon retired without assigning them a series number, and to the ČSD , which classified them as series 232.0 .
