From 1864 the area was settled by immigrants from Canada .

The place was connected from October 29, 1923 to November 1, 1987 by the Okaihau Line to the North Auckland Line of the New Zealand railway network. The former platform is next to an area that used to be the marshalling yard and north of the village is New Zealand's northernmost railway tunnel, which was never in service. An almost completed extension of the line to Rangiahua was also never put into operation and later dismantled.

The first official records of a school in the village date back to 1874. Previously, Joseph Harrison had been a local teacher since 1870 or 1871. The settlers organized the lumber for a school through the Bay of Islands MP , McCloud , and the government agreed to build the school and pay a teacher. The school was opened in 1874, initially with 21 students.

There was no secondary education facility near Okaihau until 1938 . The students either had to go to Auckland or Whangarei to boarding school or to take the Okaihau train connection to Kaikohe . In 1938 smaller schools in the area were merged and the Consolidated School opened with around 180 students.

In 1947 the school was upgraded to a district high school due to the increasing number of students , restructured to Okaihau College in 1973 and a new elementary school founded at the same time. At the end of 1973, 263 students were in college and 219 in elementary school.
