The Ɯ (lower case ɯ) is a letter of the Latin writing system . Both the uppercase and lowercase letters look like an upside-down m. In the international phonetic alphabet , the lowercase letter stands for the unrounded closed back vowel . In the Zhuang , the letter was also in use from 1957 to 1986 and stood for the same sound. Today this sound is circumscribed with a W.
