Șirnea (German Schirnen , Hungarian Sirnea ) is a village in the Brașov district ( Romania ). It is part of the Fundata municipality .

Șirnea is located in the extreme south-east of Transylvania . It is located on the east side of the Piatra Craiului Mountains , about ten kilometers southwest of Bran Castle ( Törzburg ).

history

The region above the Törzburg and below the Törzburger Pass - an important Carpathian crossing - was probably settled around the end of the 17th century. The place Șirnea was mentioned for the first time in 1729. It was a village of Romanian farmers and cattle herders.

After Șirnea belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary , the Principality of Transylvania and Austria-Hungary until the end of the First World War , it has been part of the state of Romania since then.

population

Since the first records, the community has been reported as predominantly inhabited by Romanians . In 1850, 853 inhabitants - all Romanians - were registered. Since the peak in 1941 (1141 people) the population has decreased. In 2002 there were still 349 residents.

traffic

Șirnea is a few kilometers off the pass road between Braşov and Piteşti , which corresponds to the European route 574 . There are bus connections to Brașov.

Attractions

Șirnea is the starting point for hikes in the Piatra Craiului Mountains.
