(11706) Rijeka is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on April 20, 1998 by the Croatian astronomers Korado Korlević and Marino Dusić at the Višnjan Observatory ( IAU code 120) in Croatia .
The asteroid was named after the Croatian port city of Rijeka , which was built around 180 BC. It was conquered by the Romans and moved to the place of today's old town.
