(1421) Esperanto is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on March 18, 1936 by the Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä in Turku .

The asteroid was named after the planned language Esperanto . Two years later the asteroid (1462) was named Zamenhof after its inventor Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof .
