(16761) Hertz is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on October 3, 1996 by the Italian amateur astronomer Vittorio Goretti , from his private observatory in Pianoro ( IAU code 610).
The asteroid was named on March 9, 2001 after the German physicist Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894), who became one of the most important physicists of the 19th century through his experimental confirmation of James Clerk Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light.
