(1996) Adams ( 1961 UA ; 1932 RM ; 1961 TB 2 , 1969 TW 2 , 1971 BY 1 ; 1973 SJ 3 ) is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 16 October 1961 at Goethe Link Observatory as part of the Indiana Asteroid Program was discovered.
The asteroid was named after John Couch Adams , a British mathematician and astronomer who calculated the position of the planet Neptune in the 1840s .
