(2099) Öpik ( 1977 VB ; 1977 UL 2 ) is an asteroid of the inner main belt , which was discovered on November 8, 1977 by Eleanor Helin at the Palomar Observatory .
designation
The asteroid was named after the Estonian astronomer Ernst J. Öpik (1895–1985) on the occasion of his 85th birthday. He was active in all areas of astronomy for over 60 years, especially with research on small bodies of the solar system.
