November 1978 by the Japanese astronomer Kōichirō Tomita at the Observatoire de Calern north of Grasse in France ( IAU code 010). The asteroid belongs to the Astraea family, a group of asteroids named after (5) Astraea .

(2252) CERGA was named after the Center d'Etudes et de Recherches Géodynamiques et Astronomiques (CERGA), which operates the Observatoire de Calern , where the asteroid (2252) CERGA was discovered.
