(22740) Rayleigh is a main outer belt asteroid discovered on September 20, 1998 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory .
It is one of the few celestial bodies that has a 2: 1 resonance to Jupiter .
The asteroid is named after the discoverer of the noble gas argon , the British physicist John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh (1842–1919).
