(27789) Astrakhan is an asteroid of the main belt . It was discovered on January 23, 1993 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .
The asteroid was named after the Astrakhan Khanate , a feudal state on the lower Volga River that was created by the collapse of the Empire of the Golden Horde .
