(2921) Sophocles is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey .
The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (2921) Sophocles are almost identical to those of the smaller (assuming the absolute brightness of 14.6 compared to 13.6) asteroid (7720) Lepaute .
(2921) Sophocles is named after the historical Greek playwright Sophocles .
