(30837) Steinheil is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on January 15, 1991 by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .

The asteroid was named after the German physicist , astronomer , optician and entrepreneur Carl August von Steinheil (1801-1870), who in 1855 at the personal request of the Bavarian King Maximilian II founded the later optical-astronomical institute CA Steinheil & Sons , in which the A method he co-invented for mirroring glass surfaces by means of a thin layer of silver was used to manufacture high-quality telescopes.
