(31319) Vespucci is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on April 20, 1998 by the Italian amateur astronomer Vincenzo Silvano Casulli at the Osservatorio Colleverde di Guidonia ( IAU code 596) in Guidonia Montecelio in the province of Rome .
The asteroid was named after the navigator , navigator and explorer Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512), who explored large parts of the east coast of South America on his journeys and was the namesake of America.
