(3608) Kataev is an asteroid of the main outer belt that was discovered on September 27, 1978 by the Russian astronomer Lyudmila Ivanovna Tschernych at the Nautschnyj branch of the Crimean Observatory ( IAU code 095) in Nautschnyj .

The asteroid was named after the Soviet playwright and novelist Valentin Petrovich Katajew (1897–1986), who made his empathy and literary experimentation one of the most internationally respected Soviet writers.
