(42) Isis is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt discovered by Norman Robert Pogson on May 23, 1856 . It was the first asteroid he discovered, and eight more were to follow. Isis is just over 100 kilometers in diameter. The celestial body rotates around its own axis in 6 hours and 36 minutes.
The heavenly body was named after the Egyptian goddess Isis - and the discoverer's daughter, who also bore this name.
