(4387) Tanaka is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 19, 1973 by the research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden Survey .

It is named after the Japanese astronomer Yasuo Tanaka .
